Yeah, Morning Sprite is just ridiculous [that whole DISC is just ridiculous]. The whole tune rox the faschizz, & then the drum solo comes up, & it's like, "WHAT THE - ?!! Just plain stooooopid...
Yeah, T, that VC 7 thing w/ Tim Landers on bass - I once had [a friend lost it!] the '84 tape of that infamous VC clinic tour from here in town locally during that time period [that NY '87 vid was actually several yrs after]. Vinnie - what he's playin over TL's bass vamp - now, THAT stuff was just pure sickness, too...
Gadd - that goes w/out saying...he's a groovemonster legend in my book; very musical, tells a story by 'going somewhere,' etc; & that GROOVE...Groove-wise, DW seems to me to be somewhat influenced by the 'Gadness'...2 other personal favs that are great exponents of this "storytell'g/take u somewhere" aspect [altho there r many], i would have to say, are PErskine & ESP WKennedy...
I love EJ's swingin w/ any band that he's played w/ - man, that cat can swing, which has a certain uniquely identifiable feel to it...however, sometimes his soloing is a bit 'tedious' [of course, taking into acct the fact that i've been exposed to a lot of other more contemp drum'g since EJ's 'heyday']...I've heard some good 1's fr him, tho...but i'd rather hear him drivin a trio/quar-/quintet or something [like Coltrane, Miles, etc], & doing short solos during the trades...I have copy-VHS's of several of an early 60's classic 1/2-hr TV show called "Ralph J Gleason's Jazz Casual" - 1 of the episodes has Elvin playing w/ Coltrane, Tyner, & Jimmy Garrison, 12-7-63 - SERIOUS SWINGIN on that 1 [have another w/ Morello w/ Dave Brubeck, 10-17-61 - MORE swingin]...3 other vids that i highly recomd 4 swingin - Wynton Marsalis, "Blues & Swing;" Bill Stewart & Band, "MDF '97;" & "MDF '98 Sat" w/ Jeff Hamilton & group...

I had never until this moment seen a clip of the Bud Rich Mem Schol Conc Tp 1 w/ Den C, & I have to say...if you're judging DC's playin from this standpoint, you're da** right...like Louie would say, he's like a bull in a china shop when playing w/ the rhythm[/horn] section, not sensitive musically to what's going on around him - just horrible, loud, obnoxious, overplayin', bashin' SH**...Vinnie kills him, no, DESTROYS him on that 1; w/ his fave 'buddy' DW being a "close" 2nd [img]wink.gif[/img] [oh no - no more "King of the Mountain" games again, please!!]
I'm sure glad he's playin MUCH better, these daze [img]wink.gif[/img] [img]tongue.gif[/img] ....

well FuseU1.....i think that dennis'performance on that BR tape was aoutstanding as far as technical and physical wizardry......but ur right on the first tune he plays that bass drum.....BANG BANG BANG on evry beat of the bar......YUK!!!!! however the second tune is more up his fusion ally......he plays well and the trio with louie bellson and greg bissonette.......dennis is scary!!!! he plays with so much zest and character......thats mainly why i like all of his playing but i can understand why someone wouldnt like his soloing.....dennis with niacin is the best playing!!!!

Well, let's face it [img]wink.gif[/img] ...[even tho i didnt like the play'g on that particular tune], DC is STILL an INCREDIBLE player... [img]tongue.gif[/img] ...it's his funk/jazz/rock/fusion AND pocket play'g that really kix me right square in the patootie [img]eek.gif[/img] ...what groove[!], understand'g of rhythm, & technq...
...i think this DC solo [that was posted earlier in this topic] is a lot better than most of his others in the past [even if it IS still a "hot-doggin'" one]...it shows SOME evolution...& i thot he played great on Steely Dan's "Live in America"...& his interp of the Aja solo [orig Gadd] was interest'g....
PS - LP: ...no more opinionated than the rest of us [img]wink.gif[/img] ...[it's how u word/handle it, i guess, is the secret]....

Well we all know DC claims he doesnt practice,and well, in my opinion,it shows.That isnt a dis.DC is incredible for the reasons mentioned above,but he seems to have plateaued as far as his range of expression,kind of like Gadd relying on that now-somewhat-cheesey triplet-tom thang.DC's solos always seem to feature the same 'tricks' that hes known for.DC soloing in a band setting is more enjoyable 4 me.Elvin is the same way,but i infinitely like Elvin more for what he was doing when he was coming up.He really is his own drummer.I really dig some of the soloing he was doing with Mccoy Tyner.Super original approaches to soloing in a group.Plus his ride playing is so damn cool too.So DC has worn a little thin on me,though i saw him rock the Santana band,that was impressive.cheers....beats.....

very true what beats said.....especially bout gadd. he was great.....WAS being the main word! He WAS a pioneer but look what weckls done.....hes taken a lot of gadds priciples and blown him out of the water......i know there different players with different aims and approaches but gadd is like chambers......in a band=great.....but soling=the same as always! no evolution!
aynway gadd caused me and 2000 other people 2 wait in line for 2 hours cause he arrived so friggin late for his sound check. he was bashing the drums not appearing on MTV!!!!

You know who I saw years ago who was amazing? I forget his name, but he played with the Count Basie Band in the early nineties, a big, heavy-set dude who played those drums with the holes in the sides of them. I saw him play with the CBB at the Newport Jazz Festival, and he was great. Talk about a great solo! He just slammed out these singles, then stood up and loosened his tie. The crowd went nuts. Anyone know what that guy's name is?

I love DC's groove but hate his soloing. He's completely tasteless to me. To compare him with his betters does them no justice. VC, DW, etc., are in another league. Sonny Emory could eat DC for breakfast. I've seen Sonny solo for 45 minutes and never repeat himself. He has far superior chops to Dennis. That Buddy Rich concert video of Dennis sums him up for me. It's 15 years old now and he plays the exact same stuff today. He just stretches it out. That polyrhythmic 4:3 thing is annoying and doesn't even sound good! We did a clinic with DC and he bragged that he hadn't practiced in 20 years. So yeah, I'd have to agree with the "lazy" thing. People seem to buy into his arrogance and I think that accounts for a big part of his rep.

I think the guy you may be talking about with regards to the Cout Basie band is butch miles. he plays with them now anyway. buddy rich always told people to check out butch. he has a very good technique but to me is just a clone of buddy......or is trying to be!
Vdrummer summed it up best bout dennis.....very true!
